My name is Jacquelin Arndt, and I teach GED at Lake Technical Center. My journey to Lake Tech came after many years of various and sundry employment and educational experiences. Before my foray into teaching, my employment was mainly in administrative assisting in different businesses and governmental agencies. However, I’m not just about work. Some of my interests include photography, theatre (where I met my husband), writing, traveling, and being involved in my child’s activities. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English as well as a BFA in Photography.
Earlier this summer, I took part in the State of Florida High School diploma (GED) graduation ceremony. I watched as the graduates, each wearing their graduation gown and mortar board — some trying to hide their excitement while others beaming with pride and enthusiasm — paraded into the ballroom and took their seats. Parents, siblings, grandparents, children, and friends sat behind them — a sea of smiles, waves, and camera flashes.
That evening made me think of my graduation experiences. The excitement I felt and the anticipation of a future that had yet to be written. However, there seemed to be a difference. It did not take me long to figure out what it was. Our students (You!) made a significant choice to return to their studies and complete a task that I, in my teens, took for granted. They faced challenges I never had to: full time jobs, a family and children to care for, bills that had to be paid, and other hardships I never had to overcome. These graduates have a different appreciation of their achievement that I did not have at the time. Not until I witnessed their accomplishments could I realize the impact of having that diploma in hand.
There is a saying, when one door closes another opens. Becoming a GED Instructor was one of those open doors that I am very proud to have walked through. To help someone along their path in life is a worthwhile mission, and one that I am thankful to be a part of everyday at Lake Tech. The new school year will be upon us soon; I look forward to another year of successful challenges. It’s just the beginning for me…and for you.
